Why is your Why?
Do you “want” to dance? Funny Picture from a High School Dance
Hello Dancers,
Hope you’re grinding towards the direction you want to go.
Join me and the whole family on November 23rd for a workshop and short dance practica. (Kids and Wife subject to last minute cancellations)
Tentative Schedule
1:00-2:00 “Rhythm Challenge” material. Come by and test your Rhythm Movement Footwork.
2:00-2:15 Short break, stretch, ask questions. I will Check in with Wife and be told the kids are doing great, reading etc.
2:15-3:15 My Partnering Syllabus.
I say, just like in the Animal Kingdom, where there are millions of animals, we have zoo-ologized them into 6 categories, my syllabus attempts to put “Salsa Moves” into 6 Kingdoms.
The better you understand these systems the more you can create with them.
3:15-4:00 Social Dance Practica. Dance with each other. Learn, have fun, come by.
A quote struck me that goes…
And I feel like that is so true.
I know people dance for so many reasons. One is the Social component. Meeting people, friends, your future ex-wife as my dear friend Mickey used to say.
Another reason is exercise, staving off Alzheimer’s, getting in 10,000 steps in a fun way.
Another is the challenge. Working hard, focused in improving a skill.
I love the famous choreographer Balanchine’s quote that goes..
“I don’t want to work with Dancer’s that want to dance, I want Dancer’s that need to dance.”
Did I forget any reasons? I’m sure I did.
I decided at 17 years young, “dammit I am going to be a dancer no matter what! I am going to put all my eggs in one basket and become a dancer!”
Recently I saw my best friend from school years Jeremy Cook, at The Casa Grande 30 Year High School Reunion.
Actually, in one of life’s turns, Cook became a dance Dad to an amazing dancer that just started Juilliard named Drew.
Congratulations Drew!!
At the 30 year reunion, Cook busted out a foto I hadn’t seen in decades. I got abdominal cramps laughing at it and Cook describing the disappointment of the Photographer when I walked in to ruin the uniformed portrait.
Damn, that’s how committed I was to my dance goals.
My friend group were all dressing the same but I HAD to exert my budding Salsa Persona.
I split my side laughing.
Grace added, “it looks like you’re a lead singer of a Salsa Band.”
Hahaha, what can I say? I don’t think at 17 I could have articulated an academically pleasing answer of what my “why” was. I just knew I HAD to Dance!
Cheers,
Happy Dancing,
Garry
