Hello Everyone,
Hope you’re catching some rays.
Sunday April 21st, I teach my favorite Salsa moves from the 1990’s with Grace at The Beat in Berkeley.
if you want to pre-register, Venmo @Grace-Torres-14.
I mentioned a long time ago to Grace that I want to do a workshop of a few nostalgic Salsa moves I kept from the 90’s, and she said it sounded cool.
Luckily mi Suegra and my Father-in-law are rolling into town from Managua April 17th, which means they will be available to watch the kiddos, so that Grace can assist me with the class.
That pic is me and my first mentor in Salsa Alex DaSilva, 30 years ago.
Alex is wearing my shirt, the first shirt I bought specifically for dancing Salsa.
I give credit to Alex for throwing me in the pool to sink or swim as a dance teacher.
In fact, the first studio class I taught was subbing for Alex on a Sunday at Studio J now The Beat)
The class went soul crushingly bad.
When students found out Alex wasn’t there, and some teenager was subbing, a good 3rd of the class decided better to skip and save their money.
The group openly discussed where they were going to go get drinks and appetizers right in front of me!
Another big percentage of students skipped out during the class, suddenly remembering they had something urgent to do, or going to the bathroom and not coming back.
On the way home I stared out the window dejected. I was crushed, but I took comfort in believing that no class I ever did in the future could go so shitty.
I am returning to that dance studio on Sunday April 21st for a fun class. Come join Grace and me 7-9.
We are going to play music from the 90’s, some Grupo Niche maybe some Jerry Rivera, and I might even wear my first Salsa shirt.
Cheers,
Happy dancing
Garry
